PLEASE NOTE: Dee Grant Applications for 2025-26 must have projects that occur between July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026.

Applications are due by end of day January 20, 2025.

Guidelines for Applicants

Within the proposal you must carefully explain how the project advances the aims of the Dee Grant program with explicit statements of objectives and outcomes. Proposals should provide a justification of objectives, including a statement of the potential contribution of the project to the discipline. If your proposal involves travel funds, please note that only University of Utah approved travel per diem amounts will be reimbursed. The per diem rates can be viewed on the US General Services Administration website. The proposal budget must include detailed information on the requested funds. If the proposal includes a visiting artist/lecturer, a copy of the visitors' CV, a statement of qualifications, and any associated fees must be included.

Please note that international visiting artist/lecturers are often charged a 30% US tax on their honoraria. If you are planning on bringing in an international guest, make sure to take this into account before making any arrangements with them and include this as part of your budget.

Recommendations from the Council for a successful proposal include:

  • Having a clear and detailed budget using the form provided
  • Confirming the costs of the Guest House or Per Diem (if applicable)
  • Highlighting teaching on the applicant's CV
  • Having someone read through the proposal before submitting it

Historically, unsuccessful proposals have included a lack of documentation for estimated costs (for example, airfare costs should be documented from a travel website), unclear justifications for funding requests, and proposed projects that are not aligned with teaching/curriculum.

Applicants are especially encouraged to consult with a member of the Dee Council about the applicability of the proposed project. For more info, contact the Dee Council Fellows.

There are a variety of items not ordinarily funded, including but not limited to the following:

  • Items that are more logically funded by departmental or college budgets
  • Salaries or other funding to meet staffing needs
  • Library materials that would otherwise be funded by library acquisitions (Before the funding of library-type materials will be considered, applicants must first request the purchase of these materials from the appropriate University of Utah library. If the library declines your purchase request, include with your application the letter from library acquisitions declining the request.)
  • Student tuition or scholarships
  • Publication of faculty creative/scholarly work
  • Funds cannot be used to pay faculty within the College of Fine Arts or the College of Humanities

Part I

Applicants are to completely address the following items in Part I of the application. Department Chairs/Directors are to complete Part II.

Required Information

1. Proposal:

  • Synopsis of your project in 75 words or less. (This synopsis may be used for posting to the Dee Council web pages.)
  • Project description (approximately 500 words).
  • Timetable for completion. Please note that your project MUST occur between July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026 to be eligible for funding.

2. Justification of the proposal (approximately 500 words), including:

  • Explanation of the specific ways the project advances the aims of the Dee Grant program and how it enhances your teaching (refer to the page entitled About the Dee Grant Awards under the heading "Aims of Proposals that are Fundable").
  • Please also include a brief rationale for why the Dee Grant is the most appropriate source of funding for your project.
  • If your proposal is to bring to campus a guest artist/lecturer, please include a statement of the guest’s qualifications, including a brief CV and explanation of any associated fees.

3. List of other agencies you have applied to or intend to apply to for funding in connection with the project.

Applicants may apply for additional funding, such as a University Teaching Grant, to help cover items that are outside the scope of a Dee Grant. However, applicants may not receive multiple awards from different sources for overlapping portions of the same project.

4. Detailed budget for the project, including justifications of the expenses.

5. CV of primary applicant (a brief CV of approximately 3 pages, particularly highlighting teaching).

6. List of previous Dee Grants received (year, amount & brief description).

Sample Budgets

You may view these sample budgets as an example of what must be submitted as part of your application. Please download the Excel Budget Template below to begin creating the budget for your application. Budgets should be clear, accurate, detailed, and in the correct format.

Only applications submitted through this website will be considered.

Part II

For the Primary Applicant:

Please send a copy of this information page to the Chair/Director along with a copy of your proposal (you may forward the email confirmation after you receive it from the online form). This will allow the Chair/Director to write a letter of support on your behalf. It is the applicant's responsibility to request a letter of support from the Chair/Director.

Please note that for projects involving multiple applicants from different departments, the Chair/Director of each department should provide a letter of support.

To the Chair/Director:

Your faculty member is applying to the Council of Dee Fellows for a teaching grant. Please prepare a letter of support for your faculty member's application and upload it to this online form. Your letter will be regarded as confidential. Letters must be submitted by February 07, 2025 in order for the file to be considered complete.

Please address the following points in your letter:

  1. Your overall assessment of the proposal.
  2. Statement concerning the applicant's record and standing as a teacher, including a description of the evidence on which the statement is based. In the case of visiting or career-line faculty, please specify how long the applicant is expected to be affiliated with the university.
  3. If the proposal involves a new course or courses, a statement indicating the likelihood of the course(s) being approved by the necessary departmental and/or college committees, and the probability that a successful pilot offering would lead to the inclusion of the course(s) in the regular curriculum.
  4. Please provide a statement of support for the project—including whether or not the department/school can commit additional funds to support the project, should additional funds (beyond what might be awarded by a Dee Grant) are needed.
