Title: Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) Vocal Pedagogy Institute at Shenandoah University

The Institute provides three courses, each lasting three days. Level 1 was focused on establishing the foundation of music theatre singing, with an emphasis on merging a singer’s artistic goals with their functional voice training. I explored evidence-based approaches to coordinating the structure and respiratory system required for Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM), examined vocal fold function in belting (music theatre singing), that emphasized the application of exercise physiology and motor learning principles to improve student outcomes.

Level 2 refined the vision in technique from the foundation set in Level 1. We also discussed stylistically appropriate functional exercises to coordinate the vocal tract while using vocal technique to fulfill artistic intent.

Level 3 demonstrated how artists can effectively complete custom tailored polishing work based on their specific style. It addressed analyzing CCM styles at the micro-level and introduced some of the unique differences in the needs of musical theater and commercial artists. Widely considered a leader in the field, its organizers bring in guest artists to supplement the established, vetted faculty and curriculum. The completion of the three levels allowed me to receive a certification from a respected institution that demonstrates my serious commitment to the advanced study and lifelong learning that I model for my students.
